Time-Saving Resource: The Social Security Administration's Death Master File

The Social Security Administration's Death Master File is used by various health care, financial services and other industries to identify and prevent fraud and comply with the USA Patriot Act. Benefit plan administrators can use the file to:

  • Compare a benefits recipient list to the list of deceased persons.
  • Verify a Social Security number at a time or run a list of thousands of numbers at once.
  • Confirm the date of death of retirees.

The file contains the names of 75 million persons whose deaths have been reported to the SSA and is updated regularly.

To take advantage of five free searches of the file, send an e-mail to Eulene Orr at eorr@ntis.gov. For more information, visit http://www.ntis.gov/ssa-dmf/.
