A 10-Point Plan for Better Rest

photo of tired womanStudies show some sleep disorders may be the result of poor dietary choices. Use these tips to improve the quality of your sleep.

1. Don’t oversleep
Studies show too much sleep can produce shallow sleep.

2. Wake up at the same time every day
A regular wake-up time in the morning is vital to strengthening a person’s sleep routine.

3. Eliminate noise
TV and radio may not seem like sleep disturbance, but it can be.

4. Don’t go to bed hungry
Have a light snack or a glass of milk or warm tea prior to bedtime.

5. Take a long bath
Relaxing in a warm tub can soak away a stressful day.

6. Watch out for naps
If you can, avoid a nap during the day to sleep better at night.

7. Tossing & turning
Get up and read or try relaxation exercises or meditation.

8. Exercise, exercise
Try some physical activity to work off worries, rather than letting them keep you up.

9. Avoid caffeine
Save the coffee and soft drinks for the middle of the day.

10. Pass on the alcohol
A nightcap may make you drowsy at first, but you’ll sleep less soundly and wake up more tired.
