What's New with the Flu?

It’s almost flu season again and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommends flu shots — particularly if you’re over 65 or have diabetes or breathing problems. Shots aren’t recommended for infants younger than six months or for people who developed Guillian-Barre syndrome within six weeks of a previous flu shot. The CDC also recommends flu shots for those living with diabetes patients.

A recent Dutch study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine illustrates the importance of flu shots. Flu shots administered to high-risk patients over a three-year period prevented 78 percent of expected deaths and 87 percent of expected hospitalizations.

Don’t postpone your shot this year and follow these flu-fighting tips:

  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
  • Clean your hands after every cough or sneeze.
  • Wash both sides of your hands with warm water for 15-20 seconds. Use sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
  • When you have the flu, stay home to avoid infecting others.
