Most Americans Don't Save Enough for Medical Expenses

More than half of Americans say budgeting and planning for health-care expenses is more difficult than planning for retirement and other life changes.

Moreover, this 61 percent wants better, clearer information about their specific health-care financial choices. Another 27 percent would take that one step further. They want hands-on help from experts or tools to manage health-care expenses.

John Kessler, chairman of WageWorkers, the group that did the survey, said health-care consumers currently lack the tools to manage health care the same way they plan for retirement.

Even with all the steps and tools introduced by health plans, Americans still feel unprepared to manage their own health-care costs and don’t trust insurers to guide them.

On average, 57 percent of Americans save for out-of-pocket health-care costs. Of those, 20 percent use Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts, which allow participants to save as much as 40 percent on medical costs.
