Diet Link Found to Alzheimer's
Diet has long been considered a risk factor
for heart and other diseases. Now add
Alzheimer’s to the list.
Recent studies, including one conducted
by the Medical University of South
Carolina, have found that diets heavy in
saturated fat and cholesterol dull memories
and also increase levels of beta amyloid,
a toxic brain protein believed to trigger
Alzheimer’s symptoms.
The findings raise hope that a diet low in
saturated fat may prevent the build-up of
beta amyloid and Alzheimer’s.
A recent report in the Archives of Neurology
found a similar diet link. People eating a
Mediterranean-style diet – low in saturated
fat animal products and high in fruits and
vegetables and whole grains — had a lower
risk of Alzheimer’s than people eating
standard American fare.
